Whether you’re teaching a young person to use digital technology or a whole classroom, you can include an element of digital literacy in other assignments. For example, a history project might require students to create a Pinterest board containing images, videos, and audio. Digital literacy projects can provide students with opportunities to practice critical thinking and creativity, and they can also draw on their social skills. If you have the time and budget, you should try to incorporate digital literacy into regular drop-in sessions.
One of the challenges of using digital tools is how to manage classroom behavior. Teachers should be vigilant in monitoring student behavior and use technology to enhance the learning experience. Teachers should also set rules and monitor privacy and safety precautions. While technology can be helpful, it shouldn’t be used as a substitute for traditional methods. While students may need specific technology training, digital literacy should complement the teaching practice of traditional methods. Some teachers and students may need special training in a particular technology or method, but that doesn’t mean that digital literacy should be taught separately.
Students should be taught how to evaluate information and how to learn to cite sources properly. Students may not realize that they must use proper citation techniques when they use online resources. This is very important because copying content from an online site is plagiarism. It is not uncommon for students to misconstrue the truth in an online document. Teachers should be proactive in helping students understand the importance of respecting their own privacy and their peers. While teaching digital literacy skills, it is also helpful to discuss social media and other digital technologies.
