Special Education Physical Activity and Its Impact on Student Learning

In the classroom, students with special needs often benefit from physical activity. It can improve their coordination, muscular strength, and endurance. It can also increase their attention spans and help them develop task-based behavior. Physical activity promotes good health, which is essential in fighting obesity. Teachers and parents can make accommodations that will help these students learn at their optimal levels. This article will explore the benefits of physical activity for students with special needs.

IMPACT is one such program. It serves 80 children with special needs, divided into age groups. In addition to physical activities, each child receives individual attention and encouragement from specially trained graduate students and undergraduate assistants at Oregon State University. These programs focus on developing daily living skills and enhancing a student’s academic performance. They can be customized to the child’s needs or can be provided as a supplement to their regular education.

In the United States, all students must have access to physical education, including those with disabilities. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the law requires that special education students participate in extracurricular activities, such as sports. The Department of Education is also obligated to provide physical education services to students with disabilities. This ensures that they are getting the full benefits of physical activity. The most effective way to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities is to incorporate the motor team approach. The state will then provide this education directly or make arrangements for physical activity through other programs.

In addition to being beneficial for the body, physical activity helps students with disabilities cope with stress, depression, and anxiety. Therefore, physical education teachers should take the time to make physical activity enjoyable for students with special needs. The benefit of physical activity cannot be overstated. The APENS certification exam teaches students with special needs how to adapt activities to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Teachers who pass the exam receive CAPE recognition. Some states even offer separate or add-on teaching licenses in adapted physical education. The APENS certification ensures that adapted physical education teachers have the skills to teach students with special needs. Several studies have shown that students’ attention spans improve after recess. A few have shown that after recess, students spend more time at learning centers and story reading. However, very few studies have looked at physical activity in isolation during recess. Therefore, incorporating physical activity into the classroom may be beneficial for all students. But a lot of research still needs to be done to determine how much impact physical activity has on student learning.
