Abraham is presented as the prototype of justification by faith. In theological terms, justification is monergistic—entirely the work of God. It is distinct from sanctification, which involves cooperation between the believer and the Holy Spirit. The reformers rightly maintained this distinction to protect the gospel from being corrupted by human merit.
