ENGLISH COMPOSITION

Course Description:

English Composition is a foundational course designed to develop essential writing skills for students preparing for Christian ministry, theological education, and service in the Body of Christ. This course equips students with the tools necessary for academic, devotional, pastoral, and professional writing, integrating biblical truth with academic rigor.

Students will explore various genres of composition including expository, persuasive, analytical, narrative, and devotional writing. Emphasis will be placed on developing clear thesis statements, coherent structure, logical progression of ideas, biblical integration, and proper research and citation techniques using standard formats such as MLA or Turabian.

In addition to writing mechanics, students will be introduced to the theology of communication and the responsibility of Christian writers to uphold truth, reflect Christlike humility, and minister to the body of believers through the written word. The course will examine biblical examples of writing, including the Psalms, Proverbs, Prophets, Pauline Epistles, and the Gospels, demonstrating the diversity and power of faithful communication.

Special attention will be given to ministry-oriented writing, including sermon outlines, devotionals, pastoral letters, and theological reflections. Through peer-review processes and self-editing strategies, students will also grow in critical thinking, spiritual discernment, and collaborative engagement.

By the end of the course, students will understand that writing is not only an academic discipline but a spiritual calling. Whether preparing sermons, drafting theological essays, or communicating the gospel through modern platforms, students will learn to write with clarity, purpose, and truth—for the glory of God and the edification of His Church.

This course prepares students for further academic success, ministerial effectiveness, and spiritual maturity in their communication, embodying the Apostle Paul’s exhortation in 2 Timothy 2:15 to “rightly divide the word of truth.”
